Marked by fragmentation, interruptions and great questions in the face of an uncertain future, the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer had its best expression in a theological conception that was attentive precisely to the fragmentary, whose completion, he wrote, "can only be God's work: they are fragments that must be fragments ». It is this continuity in change that stands out in this new biography, which at the same time refracts the historical reality in the personal experience of its protagonist.
From a careful documentary research and an exhaustive knowledge of his writings, this book reconstructs with narrative talent the stages and the most significant moments of Bonhoeffer's life. But not only describes their circumstances and crossroads, but penetrates the process of forming their deepest convictions. Charles Marsh pays special attention to the position of resistance adopted by Bonhoeffer from the rise of National Socialism and the claudication of the official German Church, but also to his North American experience, in which Bonhoeffer comes into contact with other Christian communities, such as those of the blacks of Harlem, and provides clues that help weigh their rich theological legacy.
