In Flight to the South (originally published in 1961), a friendly and erudite anthropoid—named, surely not by chance, Godot—traverses Poland in the company of three teenagers. By caricaturing the youthful adventure novel and adding drawings by his own hand, Mrożek achieves a rustic and absurd version of the comic, a genre as popular as it is inaccessible in communist Poland. And if the form remakes its model in an absolutely comical way, the story itself does not hesitate to ridicule the pseudo-industrialization, the five-year plans, the literary snobberies, the petty provincialisms, the small dreams of the big world and of evasion that predominated in that country. Flight to the South is one of Mrożek's first novels, in which he is already fully present: hilarious, intelligent and, above all, enormously unique.
