The recurring systemic crises reveal –once again– the imperative need to return to Marx, to understand and delve into this indisputable theoretician of modernity. An impossible task to fully undertake without knowing his life, his conflicts and struggles, in the same way as the vast work of Marx – for which he faced exile, persecution and hardship of all kinds – is key to understanding the life trajectory of the. In this sense, the present biography manages to address both with equal equity and build an intellectual narrative at the height of the genius of Trier.

This first volume deals with Marx's childhood and youth, first in his native Trier and later throughout his law studies at the universities of Bonn and Berlin; deals with the literary attempts of the young Karl, his early dedication to Hegelian philosophy, the leading role he played among the so-called "Young Hegelians" and the intense friendship that united him at that time with the radical theologian Bruno Bauer. They constitute a few years of crisis and ruptures in his intellectual development, which led him –in what would be a constant throughout his life– to abandon some projects for others and to reconceptualize his critical enterprise.
