Edith Newbold Jones (1862–1937), Wharton by marriage, was born in New York City to a wealthy family. In 1866, the family was forced to leave the country because of economic problems and traveled through France, Spain, Italy and Germany. This fact influenced the gestation of who is considered the most brilliant American writer of her generation.
