The confessions are Augustine's dialogue with God and are the fruit of his life of prayer, his meditations on the Sacred Scriptures and his apostolic efforts to serve as an example to his brothers and sisters in the faith. They are also a historical work that faithfully reproduces the stages of Augustine's conversion to the Christian faith, a "conversion" in the psychological sense of the term, that is, of a change in the way of thinking, living and being, and a "conversion" in the moral sense of the word, that is, of the total rupture with the previous life. repentance of sins committed in the past; and of a "conversion" in the theological and spiritual sense of the word, that is, in the return to God through the free and voluntary acceptance of the Christian faith and in entry into the institutional Church.
