The Nights revolves around Frits van Egters, twenty-three years old and with a boring office job. The ten chapters that make up the novel describe the last ten days of the year that Frits spends with his family, his office colleagues, and his friends. The scathing description of his parents (with whom he still lives), his nightmares, his awareness of uprooting, boredom and his declaration of love to the only being he sees capable of calming his isolation (a stuffed rabbit) make up a book with strong autobiographical content that exorcises with sour humor the tremendous loneliness that underlies each of its pages.
