If we examine Žižek's contribution to contemporary thought, this has the look of a David Lynch film. And this is not because Žižek often refers to Lynch to elucidate his theoretical postulates, but because they share the same form of materialism. It is well known that Žižek is married to Hegelian philosophy, Lacanian psychoanalysis and Marxist politics, but in this amalgamation, Hegel is the one who occupies the place of honor. Only by remaining within the field of thought and not resorting to any external material condition does one discover materiality as the cause of subjectivity. Thus, Žižek chooses Lacanian psychoanalysis and Hegel's philosophy as his philosophical touchstone for the same reason that he favors Lynch as a filmmaker. Both point in the direction of a new materialism.
