Young Uthred, having helped Alfred the Great turn Wessex into an independent Saxon kingdom, returns to the north in order to find his half-sister. But along the way he will find lands enveloped in chaos and war and a Guthred who has gone from being a slave to a claimant to the throne. This installment tells of the dark times in which England began to take shape, after the clash between Anglo-Saxon and Danish culture, between Christianity and paganism, between two irreconcilable conceptions of the world, in which Alfred the Great played a leading role.
