An elderly Brahmin lives in seclusion deep within the forest, devoted to rigorous asceticism and severe penances. He relies solely on the mortification of the flesh as a means to attain divine grace. But one day, his peace is disturbed by the appearance of a beautiful young woman who, each evening, passes by his hut on her way to pray before the nearby statue of the monkey god. This innocent girl, burdened by a terrible secret, unwittingly awakens the voracious carnal appetite of the old holy man, who invokes gods and demons alike to satisfy his lustful desires.
From the unwavering pessimism of a disillusioned spirit incapable of believing in the goodness of humankind, Naka Kansuke explores the vicissitudes of human existence and warns us of the tragic consequences that befall those who choose to follow without restraint the dictates of their most irrational desires.
