French epic singing Raul de Cambrai is one of the most cruel and violent of the Roman epic and the most famous cycle of rebellious vassals. The text that has been preserved is the late twelfth century and tells more than 8,000 verses ten syllables history of rivalry between two families in northern France for possession of the fief of Cambrai. The rebellion of Raul against the emperor Luis, his lord and uncle, and their cruel acts and sacrilegious words, but also their courage defending the family feud and his dramatic death, make it one of the heroes of the Middle Ages more significant.
