The contemporary theory and technique of Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) and its clinical applications have developed significantly in the last 25 years, since Fonagy et al. presented in 2002 their masterful integration of evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary psychoanalysis and genetics. Its formulation as a treatment for school-age children and their parents (MBT-C) represents, in turn, an evolution of Anna Freud's ideas on the importance of applying evolutionary knowledge to clinical work.
