We have a strong instinct, as a species, to live in small groups defined by a clear purpose and understanding, of thirty to fifty people who depend entirely on each other, for safety and comfort. This tribal connection has been largely lost in modern society, but it could be the key to our psychological survival. A current example of that attraction is war veterans, who return home and completely lose the incredibly intimate bonds of platoon life. The loss of this closeness may explain the high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder suffered by today's military veterans.
