Esquivel is a rat that seeks by all means to escape what appears to be the inevitable destiny of his species: the rateria, and undertakes a tireless search for his sisters, white rats that disappear without leaving the slightest trace. In his journey through the sewers of the underworld in which he lives, he will meet characters such as Rafia and Ratatatá, who will eventually lead him to the delirious domains of Dr. Plasma, a radioactive rat specialized in creating short circuits, or trying to decipher the riddles of the Great Mole, a being that feeds on salty worms, whose secrets will offer hope to fulfill its mission. While gnawing olive bones at the Paraís bar, Esquivel wonders if he is condemned to live forever in the paradise of rats, "a dump where everyone wants to make the most of the others."
