Tony Harland is a professor of Higher Education and Head of the Department of the Center for Higher Education Development of the University of Otago, New Zealand. His history is in marine ecology and he has taught this issue for almost 30 years. In 1995, Professor Harland joined the higher education research group at the University of Sheffield, the United Kingdom and since then has worked on academic development where he attends university professors to learn about his profession. In 2000 he moved to New Zealand to his current position.
Professor Harland studies the purposes of a university education. Recent projects have examined the ways in which higher education is valued, how educational values constitute an important part of the education of a student, what critical theory has to offer our thinking about university work and its relationship with society and how Students learn through research. Tony teaches both in ecology and higher education. In particular, he provides experience in qualitative research methods and other topics such as learning theory, leadership and improvement through the review of the practice that other teachers do.
