She is the author of seven novels and three books of short stories. A late author, she did not publish her first novel until she was 46 years old, and since then her literary reputation and reader appreciation have not stopped growing with each new book of hers. Her work has received the Windham-Campbell Award and the Hawthornden Award. She is Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Bath Spa.
