We are living in a time of global political crisis, which has been producing its harmful effects on all of humanity for decades. Democracy, represented until today in the form of nation states, has experienced, according to Nicolás Sartorius, a "process of shrinkage": while capitalism expanded like the universe, following the economic and technological impulses of globalization, democracy was constrained to national borders, which thus limited its own capacities for action.

The Cold War, colonialism and the subsequent processes of decolonization of the European powers, the consolidation of the welfare state and the resurgence of China are essential phenomena to understand the historical drift of the last century. The way in which the different parties, but also other forces such as the unions and the economics, have positioned themselves in this context, having to deal with such significant and pressing issues as the development of artificial intelligence, big data, climate change or growing inequality, has ended up shaping the delicate situation in which democracy finds itself.

Expansive democracy reviews the foundations of our system to propose a new, renewed and global paradigm that goes beyond the most harmful elements of capitalism. Against cynicism and in the face of an insufficient political culture, Sartorius advocates an inclusive, democratic, sustainable and more egalitarian Europe and globalisation, and an international policy exercised both from within and from outside the institutions in pursuit of a less unequal world.
