
Malaysia is torn apart by the cruelty of the recent Japanese occupation, the last gasps of the British Empire, and the beginnings of the communist guerrilla insurrection.
A survivor of the Japanese prisoner-of-war camps, Teoh Yun Ling, seeks solace among the plantations of the Cameron Highlands in central Malaysia. There lives the enigmatic Nakamura Aritomo, the emperor's former gardener.
Despite her resentment toward the Japanese, Yun Ling commissions him to create a garden in memory of her sister, who died in the same prisoner-of-war camp. Aritomo rejects the proposal but agrees to take Yun Ling on as an apprentice to restore "The Garden of Mists."
