The philosophy of religion is a relatively young discipline with practically no academic tradition in our country, which deals with religion in a non-religious way. Non-religious does not mean 'anti-religious': it simply means 'non-denominational'. The philosophy of religion is neither religious nor anti-religious. It does not pretend to defend or attack religion, but to think about it.
Theology presupposes faith, while the philosophy of religion does not start from this assumption (nor from the opposite assumption). Just as theology speaks of God, the philosophy of religion speaks of religion: it sets out to understand it by making a rational and autonomous treatment of it. Its basic assumption is that religion constitutes a historical and cultural fact that can be the object of rational, scientific and philosophical analysis like any other field of culture.
