In Argonáuticas Valerio Flaco, despite the neoclassical fashion of the Flavian era, decidedly opts for the Alexandrian and neoteric postulates: the erotic fables of mythology and the digressions of a mythological and geographical nature in the purest taste of the "colors" of the rhetoric. Far from the moral severity of the Aeneid, the work, conceived as a creative imitation of the homonymous poem by Apollonius of Rhodes, is the most faithful exponent of an era judged as a shadow of a glorious past already considered classic, being at the same time a clear reflection of the new literary aesthetics. A good son of rhetoric, Valerio Flaco seeks dramatic concentration and the elevation of pathos at all times, with Seneca and Lucan as an obligatory reference.
