
Presented as a paper at a translation studies congress in Trieste and printed as such in 1973 in the corresponding Proceedings, later published as a book by Einaudi in 1991 (and reissued in 2021, corrected and expanded), the essay "Volgarizzare e tradurre" stood out then and continues to stand out today for the original triple perspective from which the subject is approached: the terminological (with vulgarizzare revealing a vertical consideration of translation, so to speak, from the language felt to be more prestigious to the popular one, Luther's Greenutschen), the linguistic (with the old debate on "translating-betraying" or on translation ad sensum or ad verbum) and the philosophical, which sees in the background of the act of translating the difficult solution of the confrontation between different cultures and civilizations, a "dialectical motto" much studied by Folena.
