Taxation in voluntary and civic responsibility, Peter Sloterdijk explains his provocative thesis that in a democratic society compulsory tax collection would be transformed into voluntary donations of citizens to the community. The author proposes the renewal of the tax system as one way to free citizen of the ghostly character it has acquired in the current democracy. Only when citizens no longer considered himself as debtor and act as a proud contributor we face a true participatory democracy where politicians would be at least somewhat compelled to respond to the demands of citizens. This is not the call to a tax cut, but "the intensification and ethical revival of taxes as donations of citizens to the community." It is sometimes forgotten that does not involve voluntariness decrease or deletion.
Sloterdijk in this work invites us to rid ourselves of pessimism that eats away that idea that coercion understood as the only way, and bet on the possibility of a morally elevated citizen.
